New Apple Iphone emojis in iOS 15.4

The new emoji arrived on iOS as part of the first iOS 15.4 beta. These include a melting face, a pregnant man, a mirrored disco ball, and multiracial handshake emojis.

The new emoji included in this beta are from the September 2021 Unicode Recommendation: Emoji 14.0.

😀 New Apple iOS 15.4 emoticons

The iOS 15.4 beta includes seven brand new emojis, the most since the iOS 11.1 update in 2017.

While 🫢 Face with Open Eyes and Mouth Covered by Hand may sound familiar to many, this is a new emoji designed to display with eyes open/neutral on all platforms.

🤭 In iOS 15.4 beta 1, the new “Mouth Covered Face” look is now displayed with smiling eyes to match other major vendors.

This disambiguation should help avoid confusion with emoji when sending 🤭 in the future.

🧑 Gender Consistency

Since 2019, platforms have been making significant efforts to offer all people emoji with three different gender options: 👨 Male, 👩 Female, and 🧑 Human without gender.

This latest Apple beta update continues this trend by adding two new gender-neutral person emojis in the form of 🫅 Person with Crown and 🫄 Pregnant Person, as well as adding a new emoji 🫃 Pregnant Man.

✋ New hand gestures

This beta update also includes seven brand new hand gesture emojis, all of which support skin tone modifiers.

🤝 Multiracial handshakes

Today’s beta also includes 25 new versions of the 🤝 Handshake emoji.

While other platforms support single emoji skin tones 🤝 Handshake, this is the first time Apple devices support this type of emoji design in their native emoji set.

However, while each of these new 🤝 Handshake emoji designs are supported in today’s iOS 15.4 beta, the emoji picker currently only offers five options in which both hands have the same skin tone.

This is expected to change ahead of the official release of iOS 15.4 in the coming months, likely via an optional iOS 15.4 beta update.

Rounding out the list of new emojis are a few additions in the 🐻 Animals & Nature, 🍔 Food & Drink, 💡 Objects and 🔣 Symbols categories.

📶 Release

These updates will come to iOS later in the spring in iOS 15.4 beta 1, which is available to developers.

Based on the past history of iOS beta testing, it is likely that the final public release of iOS 15.4 will become available to users in March or April 2022.

As with all beta software, the design is subject to change prior to final release. This has happened with less frequency in recent years since bagelgate.
